Dungeon Monitor Role: What They Do and Why They Matter

What Is a Dungeon Monitor?

A dungeon monitor (DM) is a designated safety observer at BDSM events. Their job is to watch scenes for safety violations, intervene when necessary, and enforce the event's rules.

What a DM Watches For

Unsafe restraint technique (circulation compromise, nerve compression), scenes that escalate beyond apparent consent, partners in distress who haven't used a safe word, hardware failure, and medical emergencies.

What a DM Does Not Do

A DM doesn't participate in scenes they're monitoring or interfere with consensual play they find aesthetically displeasing. Their role is safety, not approval.

Applying This to Home Play

For home play, the "DM mindset" means one partner maintaining enough situational awareness to notice if something is wrong. For intense scenes, having a third person present specifically as a safety observer is worth considering.
