Freestanding St. Andrew's Cross
A freestanding St. Andrew's Cross uses a weighted base to remain stable without wall mounting. This is the most common type purchased for home use because it requires no permanent installation.

Stability Mechanics
A freestanding cross needs a base that extends at least 18 inches from the cross in all directions to prevent tipping when the restrained person leans against it or pulls on restraints. Some designs use floor anchor plates for added stability.
Weight
A properly built freestanding cross is heavy — typically 80–150 lbs assembled. This weight keeps it stable. If a cross seems very light for its size, the materials are likely inadequate for load-bearing restraint use.
Assembly
Most freestanding crosses ship in pieces and require assembly with basic hand tools. Assembly takes 1–3 hours. Don't rush the torque on connection bolts — over-tightening steel bolts into wood bases can crack the wood. Snug-and-firm is the target, not maximal torque.
