How to Use a St. Andrew's Cross: Setup, Positioning & Scene Guide

How to Use a St. Andrew's Cross

A St. Andrew's Cross looks intimidating but is functionally straightforward once you understand the body positioning mechanics.

Positioning the Person

The person being restrained stands with their back to the cross, spreading their arms toward the upper two anchor points and feet toward the lower two. They should reach all four points comfortably without significant stretch. If they can't reach the upper points without straining, lower the wrist restraint points or raise the person on a low platform.

Order of Restraint

Attach one wrist first, then the opposite ankle, then the remaining wrist, then the final ankle. This order keeps the person mobile enough to adjust position until all four are secured.

Check Before Proceeding

After all four restraints are applied: check wrist circulation, confirm the position is comfortable, and have both partners verbally confirm the safe word.

Access

With the person restrained facing away from the cross, the back is fully accessible for impact play and sensation play. For frontal access, reverse the orientation. Both orientations have distinct use cases.
