Three Noise Sources

Furniture movement: the MILKER table sliding across hardwood, the cross creaking as weight shifts, the cage moving. Solution: rubber feet and foam mats underneath. Cost: $15-50*.

Body sounds: skin contact, breathing, movement against surfaces. Solution: acoustic panels on walls, soft surfaces like rugs. Cost: $30-150* per panel. Hard surfaces reflect sound; soft surfaces absorb it.

Vocalization: moaning, talking, screaming. Solution: white noise machine outside the room ($25-60*) masks sound from neighbors or housemates. A machine inside the room masks external noise, allowing freer vocalization.

Floor Noise Reduction

Impact noise (furniture moving, feet moving) travels through flooring directly downward to lower levels (apartments below you) or through joists to adjacent rooms. The solution is mass and dampening underneath furniture.

Rubber furniture cups ($5-15* per set of four) reduce sliding noise when furniture moves. They don't prevent all noise but reduce it significantly. Pair these with foam underneath.

Foam floor mats (2-3 inches thick, $25-50* per mat) under the entire play zone absorb impact noise. Place the MILKER, cross, or cage on the mat. This single solution reduces noise 40-60%.

For additional reduction: mass-loaded vinyl under the mat ($1-2* per sq ft) acts as a sound barrier. Carpet over top of everything absorbs the remaining noise. Layering (vinyl + foam + mat + carpet) creates serious soundproofing, though it's complex and expensive ($100-300*+ for a room).

Wall Soundproofing

Airborne noise travels through walls. A thin bedroom wall transmits sound clearly. Acoustic panels ($30-100* per panel) mounted on walls absorb some sound. Install them on walls shared with neighbors or roommates. Six to eight panels cover a large wall reasonably.

For serious soundproofing: mass-loaded vinyl ($1-2* per sq ft) mounted behind drywall or under panels adds mass that blocks sound transmission. This requires removing drywall, adding the vinyl, and replacing drywall. Cost: $200-500* for one wall. Effectiveness: very high.

Soft furnishings absorb sound naturally. Heavy curtains, blankets, and rugs all reduce sound transmission. Curtains from floor to ceiling on every wall provide natural acoustic improvement without the appearance of 'soundproofing.'

Door and Seal Management

Doors are the biggest acoustic leak. Sound escapes around door edges (door sweeps and seals) and through hollow-core doors (acoustic hollow-core doors are much better, $50-150*). A solid-core door ($100-300*) blocks significantly more sound than standard doors.

Door sweep ($5-20*): a rubber strip at the bottom of the door eliminates the gap. Install it on the inside, at the bottom of the door. This single cheap item reduces sound transmission by 30%.

Door seal kit ($10-30*): weatherstripping around the door frame seals edge gaps. Most effective at the top and sides of the door (the largest gaps).

White noise machine ($25-60*) outside the door is the most effective noise management solution. A machine playing white noise, brown noise, rain, or forest ambience masks internal room sounds from neighbors. If someone enters the hallway and hears your room's door, they hear white noise, not specific sounds. This single tool is highly effective.

Combined: a solid-core or hollow-core acoustic door + door sweep + door seal + white noise machine outside = effective soundproofing for most situations.
